Phnom Penh: His Excellency Chea Somethy, the Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to the welfare of individuals with disabilities and the strengthening of diplomatic ties, particularly within the ASEAN region. While it was initially planned for Minister Chea Somethy to lead a Cambodian delegation to the ASEAN High-Level Forum and ASEAN-US Dialogue in Makassar, Indonesia, his pressing responsibilities have led him to appoint Secretary of State Em Chan Makara as his representative for this important event, underscoring the special attention devoted to the disability sector on the international stage.
H.E. Em Chan Makara, the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation and the Secretary General of Disability Action Council, expressed Cambodia’s pride in showcasing the outcomes of the Royal Government’s efforts to support persons with disabilities within the country. He emphasized Cambodia’s readiness to share its experiences and achievements with fellow ASEAN nations.
Representing Minister Chea Somethy, H.E. Secretary of State Em Chan Makara highlighted Cambodia’s numerous achievements in disability welfare and support. These accomplishments encompassed the establishment of disability-friendly infrastructure such as ramps, parking facilities, and visually impaired-friendly sidewalks. Additionally, the government has implemented policies and funding support for impoverished individuals with disabilities. Notably, Cambodia has developed legislation promoting the rights of persons with disabilities, offering comprehensive support throughout their lives.
The ASEAN High-Level Forum and ASEAN-US Dialogue on Disability-Inclusive Development and Partnership Beyond 2025 will take place from October 10-12, 2023, in Makassar, Indonesia.
