Poipet Transit and Reception Center Receives Over 16,000 Migrant Workers Repatriated from Thailand in the Nine Months of 2023



Banteay Meanchey: Over the nine months leading up to the end of 2023, the Poipet Transit and Reception Center has received a total of 16,349 migrant workers repatriated from Thailand, including 136 identified as victims of human trafficking.

During the inauguration ceremony of the Poipet Transit and Reception Center in Banteay Meanchey Province on the morning of December 18, 2023, H.E Chea Somethy, the Minister of Social Affairs, shared that among the repatriated workers, 8,045 were females, 6,849 were males, 762 were boys, and 693 were girls.

Upon their arrival at the center, individuals were interviewed and assessed to identify victims, providing them with short-term accommodation before facilitating their return to partner organizations and communities.

The identification process revealed 136 victims of human trafficking (26 females, 20 males, 46 girls, and 44 boys), along with 10 victims of labor exploitation (3 females, 5 males, 1 boy, and 1 girl).

It is important to note that the Poipet Transit and Reception Center in Banteay Meanchey Province was officially inaugurated on the morning of December 18, 2023. This center, a grant from the Kingdom of Thailand aimed at aiding victims of human trafficking, was constructed at a total cost of 2,999,920 US dollars, covering an area of 9,768 square meters in East Prachea Thom Village, Orussey Commune, Poipet City, Banteay Meanchey Province.
